Sanatan Dharma, often referred to as the "eternal way of life," is one of the world's oldest living spiritual traditions and forms the philosophical and cultural foundation of Hinduism. The word Sanatan means "eternal" or "timeless," while Dharma signifies righteousness, duty, moral values, and the universal principles that sustain harmony in the individual, society, and the cosmos. Unlike many religions, Sanatan Dharma has no single founder, prophet, or central authority. Instead, it has evolved over thousands of years through the wisdom of sages and the teachings preserved in sacred texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas.
At the heart of Sanatan Dharma is the belief that every living being possesses an eternal soul (Atman), which is ultimately connected with the Supreme Reality (Brahman). It teaches that life is guided by the law of karma, where every action has consequences, and that the soul undergoes rebirth until it attains moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The tradition encourages ethical living through virtues such as truthfulness, compassion, self-discipline, humility, non-violence (Ahimsa), and respect for all forms of life.
Sanatan Dharma recognizes that individuals have different temperaments and spiritual inclinations. Therefore, it offers multiple paths to spiritual growth, including the path of devotion (Bhakti Yoga), knowledge (Jnana Yoga), selfless service (Karma Yoga), and meditation (Raja Yoga). It emphasizes personal spiritual experience over rigid dogma and encourages continuous learning, self-reflection, and inner transformation.
Rooted in the principles of tolerance, diversity, and harmony, Sanatan Dharma teaches that truth can be approached through many paths while guiding humanity toward righteous living, inner peace, and the realization of the divine presence within all creation.
